About the Medical Society
The Orange County Medical Society was founded May 26, 1908 when ten Central Florida physicians met in the home of Dr. John S. McEwan. The founding members present that evening were Drs. Jerome Bruce, N. DeVere Howard, W.S. King, C.D. Christ, Washington Kilmer, Sylvan McElroy, J.S. McEwan, W.C. Person, George Porter and J.D. Rush.
Today the society proudly represents more than 750 allopathic and osteopathic physicians, residents, and medical students in Orange County. One of 44 component medical societies chartered by the Florida Medical Association, the Orange County Medical Society is a non-profit professional membership organization whose mission is to advocate for the highest quality of health care, while ensuring freedom of choice, and access to affordable medical care. Although membership is voluntary, physicians choose to join because they know that team efforts are most effective in attaining their goal of quality medical care for their community.
The mission of OCMS is to provide educational resources for medical professionals and the community, to be politically active in protecting the interests of patients and physicians and to provide support for physicians in their practice of medicine. OCMS provides physicians with the opportunity to keep in contact with each other, discuss new technologies, exchange clinical information, and learn of the environmental changes in medical care that are sweeping the nation. For over 100 years, OCMS has made many strides in organized medicine and will continue its mission for quality healthcare in the years to come.
