A Message to Members from OCMS President Kevin Sherin, MD

It is an honor to serve you as the 102nd President of the Orange County Medical Society. Our society has a long and distinguished history of service to our medical community. OCMS has a very recent history of great progress for Florida on malpractice and tort reform amendments.  1990’s OMCS President, Cecil Wilson MD, FACP of Winter Park, a past FMA President, has now been named as the President-elect of the AMA to become the AMA President in June. This creates a great opportunity for us in the Orange County Medical Society at this crucial time.

The Massachusetts election results are a blue moon event for our country. A Republican Senator being elected from the Bay State with a map that turns red happens once in a "blue moon.”  There was a true blue moon on Dec 31st—two full moons in December. Senator Scott Brown's election could send health reform back to the drawing board.  For OCMS and the AMA this could mean delays in health care reform and real opportunities for OCMS to have input into the process. Now is the time for all physicians in Orange County to join OCMS and its committees.

The legislative affairs committee will be chaired by Dr. Ernest Page, an ER physician who has worked with the Florida College of Emergency Physicians on tort reform.  Dr. Page was nominated by Congresswoman Brown to be the U.S. surgeon general a year ago, and he is very excited to now serve your OCMS. Spread the word and get involved with OCMS today.  Our time to make a difference for medicine and our patients has come.  OCMS will be providing regular updates on the Haiti relief efforts, the medical needs and the most reputable points for donation or service. Use Facebook to spread the word about all that is happening in OCMS.

I look forward to a great year in serving you all in 2010, the Blue Moon year.

Kevin Sherin, MD, OCMS President
